Upstairs loft in the weary traveler house

Case File: The Weary Traveler PittsBurgh

Allentown Neighborhood, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Date Investigated: Friday April 11th 2025

History of the Weary Traveler House (est. 1903)

Built in 1903, the Weary Traveler stands in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Allentown neighborhood, a district once home to steelworkers, craftsmen, and immigrant families who helped build the city’s industrial legacy. The two-story frame house reflects the working-class architecture of early 20th-century Pittsburgh, with much of its original woodwork and floorboards intact.

Over the decades, this modest home has sheltered many residents, each leaving faint traces of their time here. Its proximity to local taverns, streetcar lines, and shops may have earned it the affectionate nickname “The Weary Traveler”, a place where tired workers once found rest after long shifts in the mills.

Paranormal Reported Activity

A faint floorboard creak in the hallway near the living room was experienced while I was alone in the home prior to the team’s arrival. It gave the impression of someone standing just out of sight.

Investigation Notes

  • Solo entry: Investigator entered the house around 4:00 PM and spent approximately one hour alone; no activity beyond the creak was noted.

  • Full investigation: Steel City Ghost Hunters and the investigator spent ~4 hours in the home.

  • Interactive session in loft room:

    • Big band music (1930s–1940s) played via iPhone.

    • Rem Pod and cat balls responded immediately when music played.

    • Frank Sinatra songs produced repeated hits and light activity.

    • No response when country or modern music was played.

  • Other findings: No further unusual events were documented that evening.

Analysis & Correlations

The results suggest a music-triggered residual or intelligent response, likely associated with a resident or guest who lived in the home during the Big Band era. The selective reaction to swing music, especially Sinatra, indicates a possible emotional or temporal link to that period.

Further genealogical and property research into 1930s–1940s ownership records, city directories, or census data may reveal individuals connected to this house who favored this genre. Understanding who lived here and their occupations or cultural backgrounds could provide key insights into the spirit identity or era of attachment.

Conclusions & Next Steps

Although not definitive, this investigation produced a repeatable and measurable reaction correlated with specific musical triggers. Future visits should include:

  • Controlled playback sessions comparing live music, silence, and varied genres.

  • Infrared monitoring during each trigger session.

  • Expanded historical research on the 1930s–1940s occupants.

These follow-ups will help determine whether the phenomenon is residual, environmental, or interactive in nature.
